Michael Lonergan, P. Eng.

Consulting Engineer

BIOGRAPHY:

Michael founded Lonergan Engineering in 2013, bringing together a rare blend of hands-on trade experience and engineering expertise. 
Raised in the electrical and fire protection industry, Michael’s earliest memories were learning grounding and bonding at age 3 and assisting on fire alarm calls as a teen such as 3am service calls for ground faults and emergency repairs. 
He logged over 4,500 hours under a 309A Licensed Electrician at M-L Fire & Burglary Alarms, gaining a deep respect for the realities of installation and service work—knowledge that continues to shape his practical, safety-focused design and engineering approach. 
Michael has over two decades of experience and holds a fast-tracked Electronics Engineering Technologist diploma, a Bachelor of Engineering from Lakehead University. He is licensed as a P.Eng. in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and holds a Consulting Engineer designation.
He is deeply invested in the industry. In addition to multiple awards, he regularly shares his expertise via educational presentations and is an active member of CFAA Central Ontario, volunteering his time and supporting the education committee. 

Karima Dharssi, P. Eng., LEED AP

Senior Electrical Engineer

BIOGRAPHY:

Karima began her engineering career as a co-op student at the University of Waterloo, graduating in 2007.  After exploring various consulting firms and design approaches, she found her home at Lonergan Engineering in 2017—and never looked back.  Though her portfolio is diverse, healthcare design is her specialty.  Karima values team collaboration and has long since given up the notion that engineering work is to be done with pride; rather she believes that true engineering is done with humility.  She holds a Professional Engineering license in Ontario, a BASc in Electrical Engineering, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Michelle Vicente, LEED Green

Associate

BIOGRAPHY:

Michelle has 20 years of experience in electrical consulting, with projects spanning retail, commercial, hospitality, healthcare, residential, education, and transportation sectors across Canada. 
Her work ranges from 500 sq. ft. spaces to towering 46-storey buildings. Specializing in project delivery, Michelle brings deep expertise in lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, monitoring and metering systems—handling everything from simple to complex designs. 
Renowned for her commitment to quality, she believes that great service starts with a great product. Michelle is also known for strong client relationships, building trust that lasts long after the project is done.

Jeremy Walker, RSE, ME, B.BA

Contract Administrator, UL Integrated Testing Coordinator

BIOGRAPHY:

Jeremy began his career by combining a business degree and a curiosity for “how things work” with experience in his family’s electrical company. From apprentice to President & CEO, he led diverse projects and built a reputation for honesty, quality, and collaboration. 
In 2019, he joined Georgian College as a Professor of Electrical Apprenticeship Studies and in 2022, Jeremy joined Lonergan Engineering to focus on integrated systems testing. 
He brings real-world insight and a cooperative mindset to every project. As well as expertise in ULC-S1001—the Standard for Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems. 
Jeremy holds a Master Electrician license, a 309A Red Seal, and a BBA.

Sarah Lonergan

Administrator

BIOGRAPHY:

For over a decade, Sarah has been the operational backbone of Lonergan Engineering. 
As the administrator, she manages everything from financial planning and project tracking to invoicing processes—ensuring each project flows seamlessly from concept to completion. Sarah plays a key role in client communications, making sure they have the information and support they need at every stage. Her attention to detail and commitment to efficiency are essential to the firm’s high standard of service. 
She holds a BA and BEd from Lakehead University, along with a Bookkeeping Certification from Seneca College.

Karolina Gaworecka, RSE

UL Integrated Testing Coordinator

BIOGRAPHY:

Karolina began her electrical construction and maintenance career in 2013, driven by a passion for problem-solving and ensuring safety. Her dedication quickly led to a foreman role, where she managed jobs across various commercial industries, eventually sparking her interest in life safety systems. 
In 2023, Karolina took the next step in her career by joining Lonergan Engineering as an Integrated Testing Coordinator. With extensive experience in life safety systems, she is committed to helping the construction industry understand and ensure safety compliance. 
Karolina holds a 309A Construction & Maintenance Red Seal license.

Noah Southard

Junior Electrical Designer

BIOGRAPHY:

Noah began his career in electrical design while completing his studies at George Brown College. With a background in the hospitality industry as a cook and chef in downtown Toronto, Noah developed a strong work ethic and honed his communication and collaboration skills. 
In 2023, he graduated from the Architectural Technology program, gaining expertise in 3D modeling, drafting, and the Ontario Building Code. 
Eager to expand his knowledge, Noah transitioned into the Construction Management program at George Brown, where he’s learning from industry professionals and gaining a comprehensive understanding of project management and procurement practices.

Project description:

Full Addition and Modifications to Existing Building.

This prestigious Crystal Ballroom and pre-function space, built for royalty, opened in the roaring 1920s showcasing
oversized crystal chandeliers. The Ballroom was shutdown in 1979 due to safety codes and standards. The Crystal
Ballroom fell into disrepair, but the stories lived on.
The nearly century old construction methods of clay block and skim coated expanded steel mesh ceilings, limited
the lighting options. Budgeting was being consumed by revitalizing the original millwork, life safety upgrades and
custom electrical solutions, which all required a complete overhaul.
The luminaires were designed to reflect the opulence and intricacies of the heavily restored mouldings and original
architectural details. Harmonizing with the rich blue carpet, the three large- scale brass chandeliers are delicate
starbursts that reflect a timeless elegance by respecting the property’s history and interpreting 1920s style in a
contemporary fashion. The consistent use of crystals reflect the light from both the luminaires and the natural light
flowing in through the floor to ceiling windows, which adds sparkle throughout the space. This sparkling radiance
perfectly defines why this Crystal Ballroom is often referred to as the crown jewel of the City.
Fully dimmable controls are zoned based on location and luminaire type. Various scenes are available at touch
screen interfaces. Scenes have tailored lighting levels for Event, Social, Dining, Clean-up and Exhibition. Custom
scenes can be added with the intelligent ELV dimming system.
Detailed modelling was developed to visualize the design concepts and explore design options. By creating
custom crafted photometric files, the team was able to increment sources of light until the optimal uniformity and light
levels were achieved. The result of this modelling assisted in the custom crafting of the chandlers. The various LED
lamps create multiple sources of light to refract through the guest’s equally elegant jewels.

This project was a renovation of the existing common areas and office spaces and new build of a new 3D laser testing theatre. The site was also redeveloped incorporating new lighting and landscaping.

Project Description:

This project took place during a live construction of a 47,000 square foot addition and renovations to the existing building. The Chiller and Electrical Service upgrade was mandated during construction and previously unforeseen to the Client. The project upgrade was issued as a sperate CCDC-02 contractor which included temporary power to keep all systems online pertaining to the new addition and renovations, this aided in not delaying the ongoing work. The electrical service was upgraded from a 1600A 120/208V 500kVA transformer to a 2,000A 100% rated 120/208V service with a new 750kVA transformer along with new primary and secondary ductbank and new transformer vault.

Interior renovations consisted of, Admin office moving to Library, Library moving to gymnasium, a new gymnasiums addition, with an additional child care center. The existing electrical distribution was reworked, new lighting, power, fire alarm, communications, audio visual and security systems were extended and added to the new addition.

This project included extensive renovations along with a full lighting upgrade and electrical distribution upgrade. This project was split into 2 phases. Phase 1 included the renovations and complete lighting upgrade from fluorescent to LED luminaires. Phase 2 included the replacement of the existing switchgear lineup and update to the incoming electrical service by removing the existing electrical distribution equipment and replacing with a new utility transformer and new downstream electrical equipment.

Project description:

This project involved the removal of the existing Operations building and the construction of the new Creemore Roads Garage which is the Operations Centre for the City Works. The building consists of an office area and ten truck bays. The project also included the relocation of the existing fuel system and the installation of a new stand by diesel generator. The incoming electrical service was upgraded and modified to suit the new facility.

Role:

Lonergan Engineering Inc was responsible for the Electrical engineering design and provided contract administration for the electrical scope of this project. 

The scope of work included: 

• Coordination of incoming electrical services with the local utility,
• Coordination with diesel fill stations for service trucks,

• Electrical load calculation, 
• Power distribution design, 
• Infrastructure for all low voltage systems,
• Lighting and networked lighting controls, accessible by offsite facility managers, and
