Consulting Engineer

BIOGRAPHY:

Michael was raised in the electrical and fire protection industry. His earliest memories start at the age of 3, learning about grounding and bonding. Michael recalls as a young teenager, being on 3:00AM fire alarm service calls, assisting fire alarm technicians with clearing faults and resetting fire alarm systems. Michael officially started in the family electrical and fire protection business in 1999 at M-L Fire & Burglary Alarms Ltd. , where he has registered 4,553 hours under direct supervision of a 309A Licensed Electrician. With much encouragement from Michael’s foremen, Michael realised, to have a greater impact on functionality and to improve on the application of life safety systems, he would have to enter the design and engineering world.

Michael started his post secondary education at RCC College of Technology in 2002. Within 18 straight months, Michael fast tracked a 3 year Electronic Engineering Technologist Diploma. During his time, he spent over 800 hours in the Electronics Lab. Michael’s impressive technologist diploma project landed a spot on CTV’s Breakfast Television. Michael then leapt to Lakehead University for the engineering transfer program where he spent an additional 3 years completing his undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Engineering, in electrical.

Michael possesses a Professional Engineering License in the Province of Ontario with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, along with Diplomas in both Electronics Engineering Technician and Technologist.

Lonergan Engineering Inc. was founded by Michael in April of 2013.

Senior Electrical Engineer

BIOGRAPHY

Karima began her career in engineering while she was still a co-op student attending the University of Waterloo. After graduating in 2007, she dabbled for a few years at various consulting engineering firms, all the while learning about different project types, new methods of design, and alternative company structures.

In 2017, Karima joined Lonergan Engineering and has never looked back.

While her project portfolio has become quite diverse throughout her tenure in the industry, her area of expertise lies in healthcare; she has had a hand in the design of almost every new hospital in Ontario in the last 10 years.

Karima has an innate ability to understand the bigger picture of engineering projects, and seeks co-operation, rather than conflict, with all members of a project team in order to achieve the project’s common goal. She has long since given up the notion that engineering work is to be done with pride; rather she believes that true engineering is done with humility.

Karima possesses a Professional Engineering license in the province of Ontario, a Bachelor’s degree of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Associate

BIOGRAPHY

Michelle has been in building services, specifically in the electrical consulting industry for 20 years and has been involved in many distinct projects across Canada spanning many sectors including retail, commercial, hospitality, healthcare, residential, education and transportation. Michelle has worked on projects as small as 500 square feet to as large as 46 storey buildings.

Michelle specializes in overall project delivery with an in-depth knowledge of designing electrical systems such as lighting systems, normal and emergency power distribution systems, fire alarm systems, monitoring and metering systems etc. She is accustomed to projects of various complexities from the most basic to the most intricate.

Being known for her quality control and quality management, she firmly believes in a quality product, which leads to quality service which in turn leads to a highly successful project. She is also known for her client relations and building mutual trust developing lasting relationships.

BIOGRAPHY

Jeremy commenced his career in the electrical industry through an interest in doing something different.  Taking an education in Business and an interest in how things worked, he brought the skills together within a family electrical business.  Through a career from apprenticeship through to becoming President & CEO, he has participated in a multitude of projects in a variety of industry segments.  

In 2019 a new path presented itself for Jeremy in electrical apprenticeship education through Georgian College.  Merging his passion for the electrical industry and his commitment to learning, Jeremy accepted a position as Professor of Electrical Apprenticeship Studies where he teaches electrical apprentices from diverse backgrounds.

In 2022 after conversing over ULC-S1001, The Standard for Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems, Jeremy joined Lonergan Engineering and is looking forward to bringing his experience and perspective to projects from the proverbial “other side of the fence”.

Jeremy developed a reputation for honesty, commitment, and quality in the projects within his portfolio.  Preferring collaboration and cooperation to conflict, Jeremy approaches projects with an open mind and a desire to learn while striving to execute the vision of the project.

Jeremy possesses a Master’s Electrician license in the province of Ontario, a 309A Construction & Maintenance Red Seal license, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Administrator

BIOGRAPHY

Sarah has been the driving force behind the administrative operations at Lonergan Engineering Inc. for over 10 years. As the administrator, she oversees the company’s daily operations, ensuring that everything runs smoothly from financial management, project tracking and proposal planning.

Sarah possesses a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University, along with a Bookkeeping Certification from Seneca College. Her dedication to streamlined processes and operational efficiency supports Lonergan Engineering Inc’s commitment to delivering top-quality services.

UL Integrated Testing Coordinator

BIOGRAPHY

Karolina started a career in electrical construction and maintenance in 2013 after an interest in starting something new and challenging. A passion for problem-solving and ensuring safety drove her to excel and would lead to becoming a foreman and running jobs. This led to exposure to many commercial industries and developed her interest in life safety systems. 

In 2023, Karolina continued on the next step of her career in life safety by joining the Lonergan Engineering Team as an Integrated Testing Coordinator. She is motivated to use her lengthy life safety systems knowledge and experience to help bring understanding to the construction industry and ensure safety compliance.

Karolina possesses a 309A Construction & Maintenance Red Seal license.

Full Addition and Modifications to Existing Building.

This project was the construction of a 47,000 square foot addition and renovations to the existing building. The project included the upgrade of all incoming services and modification and expansion of all existing systems. The site

was redeveloped to suit the additional building.

Project Description:

This project took place during a live construction of a 47,000 square foot addition and renovations to the existing building. The Chiller and Electrical Service upgrade was mandated during construction and previously unforeseen to the Client. The project upgrade was issued as a sperate CCDC-02 contractor which included temporary power to keep all systems online pertaining to the new addition and renovations, this aided in not delaying the ongoing work. The electrical service was upgraded from a 1600A 120/208V 500kVA transformer to a 2,000A 100% rated 120/208V service with a new 750kVA transformer along with new primary and secondary ductbank and new transformer vault.

Project description:

This project included a 14,000 sq ft 6 classroom addition, with supporting spaces. Interior renovations consisted of, Admin office moving to Library, Library moving to gymnasium, a new gymnasiums addition, with an additional child care center. The existing electrical distribution was reworked, new lighting, power, fire alarm, communications, audio visual and security systems were extended and added to the new addition.

This project included a 9,000 sq ft 6 classroom addition with supporting spaces, connected to the existing school and modifications to the existing building. The existing electrical distribution was reworked, new lighting, power, fire alarm, communications, audio visual and security systems were extended and added to the new addition.

Project description:

This project included extensive renovations along with a full lighting upgrade and electrical distribution upgrade. This project was split into 2 phases. Phase 1 included the renovations and complete lighting upgrade from fluorescent to LED luminaires. Phase 2 included the replacement of the existing switchgear lineup and update to the incoming electrical service by removing the existing electrical distribution equipment and replacing with a new utility transformer and new downstream electrical equipment.

Project description:

This project involved the removal of the existing Operations building and the construction of the new Creemore Roads Garage which is the Operations Centre for the City Works. The building consists of an office area and ten truck bays. The project also included the relocation of the existing fuel system and the installation of a new stand by diesel generator. The incoming electrical service was upgraded and modified to suit the new facility.

Role:

Lonergan Engineering Inc was responsible for the Electrical engineering design and provided contract administration for the electrical scope of this project. 

The scope of work included: 

• Coordination of incoming electrical services with the local utility,
• Coordination with diesel fill stations for service trucks,
• Site lighting design and photometric calculations, 
• Electrical load calculation, 
• Power distribution design, 
• Infrastructure for all low voltage systems,
• Lighting and networked lighting controls, accessible by offsite facility managers, and 
• Contract administration.

Client: The Corporation of the County of Simcoe.

This project was the replacement of the existing fire alarm system complete with new fire alarm control panel, annunciator panel and all field devices. All components were modified and installed to suit current AODA and Ontario Building Code Requirements.

Project description:

Full Addition and Modifications to Existing Building.

This prestigious Crystal Ballroom and pre-function space, built for royalty, opened in the roaring 1920s showcasing
oversized crystal chandeliers. The Ballroom was shutdown in 1979 due to safety codes and standards. The Crystal
Ballroom fell into disrepair, but the stories lived on.
The nearly century old construction methods of clay block and skim coated expanded steel mesh ceilings, limited
the lighting options. Budgeting was being consumed by revitalizing the original millwork, life safety upgrades and
custom electrical solutions, which all required a complete overhaul.
The luminaires were designed to reflect the opulence and intricacies of the heavily restored mouldings and original
architectural details. Harmonizing with the rich blue carpet, the three large- scale brass chandeliers are delicate
starbursts that reflect a timeless elegance by respecting the property’s history and interpreting 1920s style in a
contemporary fashion. The consistent use of crystals reflect the light from both the luminaires and the natural light
flowing in through the floor to ceiling windows, which adds sparkle throughout the space. This sparkling radiance
perfectly defines why this Crystal Ballroom is often referred to as the crown jewel of the City.
Fully dimmable controls are zoned based on location and luminaire type. Various scenes are available at touch
screen interfaces. Scenes have tailored lighting levels for Event, Social, Dining, Clean-up and Exhibition. Custom
scenes can be added with the intelligent ELV dimming system.
Detailed modelling was developed to visualize the design concepts and explore design options. By creating
custom crafted photometric files, the team was able to increment sources of light until the optimal uniformity and light
levels were achieved. The result of this modelling assisted in the custom crafting of the chandlers. The various LED
lamps create multiple sources of light to refract through the guest’s equally elegant jewels.

Although the custom luminaires were selected by the interior designer, Lonergan Engineering Inc. completed extensive photometric calculations which were used in the building of the luminaires. The complete design and restoration were in line with heritage requirements.
